Outback Observations: Comfort foods define home

What’s in a burger? They’re all the same basic ingredients; meat, veggies, buns, cheese. So why are southern Oregon residents spending upwards of three hours in waiting lines to get a bite of one at the new In-N-Out Burger in Medford?
At my previous home in Los Angeles I was within walking distance of an In-N-Out, and sure there were plenty of late night strolls to grab a burger and fries, but certainly not enough of a craving to consider waiting in line for three hours. Yet at the same time, I often strongly considered making the 13-hour drive back home to Eugene just to get a Cart de Frisco sandwich or a plate at Hawaiian Time, two flavors of home that never quite tasted the same at other restaurants. For a time when friends from Oregon flew down to visit I would request they bring an entire suitcase full of Nalley’s chili, each small bowl transporting me back to life in Oregon.
It isn’t the ingredients in the burger per se that has people waiting hours, it’s the nostalgia of a taste that brings back memories of home. Here in Lake County the selection of flavors may not be as vast as in more populated areas, but nonetheless there are distinct flavors. Residents that have moved on to other pastures may have the benefit of chain restaurants and more selection, yet no matter how far they travel nothing will taste quite like back home. With only one chain restaurant in the entire county, the added distinction of almost entirely locally owned grills cooking one-of-a-kind recipes only adds to this connection.
Whenever I make it back to my home the immediate checklist isn’t to see friends and family, but where to go first, attributing this pizza or that burrito as much to the life I left behind as the people. Now after having made Lake County home for nearly two years, Lake County flavors have crept into that list also. After visiting nearly every state I can honestly say that nowhere is tri-tip served like it is here. What can be said, except that ranchers know their beef. From fundraiser barbecues to banquets, if it’s on the menu I make sure I’m the one covering the story.
When students go to college, there are boundless new experiences and adventures ahead. Yet when a care package is requested from mom or a trip is planned to come home, often food is the first thought. There is nowhere else that tastes quite like Lake County.
This is the reason for long lines at Medford’s newest restaurant. As a transplant here I can understand how others who relocated to Oregon would wait hours for a burger. For anyone who lived in California, between those two buns is a little taste of home. The burger isn’t the draw, it’s about being transported back to cherished memories, where the food served as the backdrop.
I may not be in a hurry to fight crowds in Medford, yet it’s comforting to know it’s there when I start to miss Los Angeles. Someday inevitably I may leave Lake County for good, and if that day comes I expect, or at least hope, somebody to provide an occasional tri-tip care package to take me back to the time I called Lake County home. It is after all a taste of home that defines home.
Bon appétit, burger lovers.
